Figure Study - Sara - Bagpipes
Once again another Georgian College photography student has volunteers to be part of this series. Sara graduated the program in 2021. I was trying to figure out what type of instrument to use for this shoot when a week or so before I was doing some shots for the Barrie Legion. I spotted Peter Johnstone-Shultz of the Barrie Pipes and Drums band playing the bagpipes. He was thrilled that his instrument would be featured in the shoot. As you can see I think I matched the perfect instrument with Sara. Now this was only the second time since 2018 where I didn’t have an assistant or where my model did not bring a friend. I am thankful that Sara put her trust in me to make her both comfortable and safe. Also a first was that I included using a white as well as a black backdrop.
History - Bagpipes are considered a woodwind instrument. Apparently, they have been around prior to the 13th century AD. Bagpipes declined in popularity over the centuries until the early 1900s where large numbers of pipers where trained for military service in World War l and World War ll. An estimated 1000 pipers were killed in the Great War.
